Nursing shortage comes to a head
The quality of life of those in need of help and care suffers first and foremost, but also the quality of work of the nursing staff. In addition, nurses and doctors leave their professions after eight and twelve years respectively because the physical and mental strain becomes too great and the profession is not compatible with family life. This leads not least to the nursing profession being unattractive for new recruits. As a result, the relationship between supply and demand for workers with professional qualifications in medical and healthcare professions is becoming increasingly critical.
This can have severe social and economic consequences. The PwC study "Demographic change: Germany's workforce is becoming scarce" ( Link directly to the study ) from 2016 predicts that around 710,000 full-time nursing positions could remain unfilled in Germany in 2030 if the general conditions do not change. In the long term, this could lead to a further decline in the quality of life of those in need of help and care and in the quality of work of caregivers, making the occupational field of "care" increasingly unattractive.

As such, they are designed to act in an informative and communicative manner, showing themselves to be curious, helpful and self-sufficient. Pepper can, for example, help out in the reception area and act as a guide, take over the risk instruction or preparation of patients, or be linked to the nursing software. Used in waiting areas, the robot can minimize nervousness or anxiety. In this way, it not only improves the quality of life of those in need of help and care, but also relieves the workload of caregivers and thus improves the quality of their work.
Relief in care through Pepper and Robot.Care
Robots are designed to support and relieve nursing staff in their everyday work in a variety of ways: they take over routine and administrative tasks, thus contributing to better work organization and quality of life.
Pepper has been visiting our six inpatient care facilities on a regular basis since the beginning of 2020. Pepper visits the seniors several times a month in the group room, on the living area or in residents' rooms. Our residents are getting to know Pepper better and better and are always visibly happy about a visit and the many entertainment options that the robot offers them.
